What is a Tummy Tuck and how is it performed in Houston?
Every woman wants a flat, even, firm tummy, but few succeed. Pregnancies, weight gain and weight loss take a tremendous toll on a woman’s body, especially in the stomach area. Repeatedly stretched and scarred, many women’s bellies are loose, oversized and out of shape. Often, the situation can’t be improved much even with a strenuous exercise program. But, there is a solution.
Our Houston tummy tuck procedure can help. It can remove the excess skin and tighten up the underlying musculature giving you a flatter, firmer, and tighter stomach. If there is a significant amount of fat excess over the abdomen, liposuction or suction assisted lipectomy may be needed as a separate procedure.
The perfect candidate for a tummy tuck by Dr. Wiener will be in overall good health and have excess fat and loose, sagging skin in the abdomen. This can be a result of weight loss or pregnancy. Patients who wish to undergo a tummy tuck should be done having children, as pregnancy will re stretch out the skin and muscles. To know for sure if you are the right candidate for a tummy tuck, call our office today to schedule your consultation.
There are several popular approaches for abdominoplasty in Houston. The most common involves an incision across the lower abdomen, above the pubic area, and beneath the bikini line. An incision is also made around the belly button to free it from the surrounding skin. The skin is separated from the abdominal wall and lifted up to the rib cage. Next deeper loose muscle connections are pulled from the left and right of the abdomen together, towards the center, and it is sutured together. This tightens muscles, provides a stronger abdominal wall and reduces abdominal bulging.
The skin is then lowered and the excess is removed. A new opening is made for the belly button at the proper position (the old location is now much too low). The incisions are closed with sutures and a light dressing is placed over the area.
Progressive Tension Suture Technique – Dr. Wiener’s Modification
Dr. Wiener uses his published modification of the progressive tension suture tummy tuck technique for Houston patients. The advantages of this are the ability to avoid using drains post-op, an improved scar, decreased chance of a seroma or fluid collection under the skin post-op, and for most patients, the ability to stand straight after surgery rather than having to be bent at the hips.
However, this technique will leave folds, creases, and dimples in the skin on average for 4-6 weeks after surgery. This is normal, and may be more severe in some patients. This appearance will resolve over time, as the internal progressive tension sutures dissolve.
What should I expect after my Tummy Tuck in Houston?
You may have to wear a light support garment for several weeks after this Houston cosmetic surgery. After surgery, you will have some soreness and discomfort which can be controlled with medication. You may need to remain flexed at the hips for up to two weeks to reduce the strain on your abdominal area. You will be up and around after that, but should avoid over activity and straining for six to eight weeks. You will probably be able to return to work in two to three weeks.
By removing the sagging, excess skin and repairing the muscle wall bulging, you’ll immediately enjoy a flatter, firmer abdomen. Although every effort is made to minimize scarring, the scars will be permanent but will fade to some degree over time. Within six to twelve months your scars will generally get flatter, become lighter in color and improve considerably. As can be seen in the photo gallery, the scars are still very visible at 2 months post-op.
Planning for your Tummy Tuck with Dr. Wiener
In order to undergo a tummy tuck in Houston, you must have finished having children, with no further plans for pregnancy. The only potential exception to this is in someone who does not have any muscle wall bulging, but has skin sagging. In that circumstance, a modified tummy tuck to only remove the excess skin can be done, understanding this will most likely be stretched back out with future pregnancies. If muscle wall bulging needs correction, however, a standard tummy tuck is done and you must have finished having children.
Most importantly for a tummy tuck, you must be completely off of all nicotine of any type or amount including cigarettes, cigars, nicotine gum or patches, chewing tobacco, etc., due to a significant increase in risk of skin loss and extreme scarring.
