"Mommy makeover" is a term that does not specify any one type of surgery, but rather a correction of changes in the body after pregnancy and childbirth. Some surgeries that make up a mommy makeover can include liposuction, a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, or a breast lift. A good candidate for a mommy makeover will be in good general shape. Being near or close to your goal weight can produce a better outcome with any of these surgeries. Breast feeding or production of milk after pregnancy needs to resolve before breast surgery can proceed, in order to decrease certain risks. There are also some things patients should know if they are interested in undergoing a mommy makeover. Some things to be aware of are:
- If you are a smoker, certain surgeries cannot be done with nicotine in the system, such as breast lifts or tummy tucks. Typically, I will have patients stop all nicotine intake of any type and amount for at least two months before surgery and until at least one month after. This prevents significant skin loss and extreme scarring.
- If liposuction is necessary before a tummy tuck, Dr. Wiener recommends a consistent exercise program of both aerobic and weight training, as well as an improved diet of decreased calories, decreased fatty and fried foods, and reduced carbohydrates. This will help to maintain the results of body contouring surgery such as liposuction and a tummy tuck. If lifestyle is not changed, then you can gain weight back after the surgery.
