With surgery, when an incision is made in the skin, the healing process forms a scar. How visible that scar is depends on many factors, but especially how your individual body scars. Although there will always be a scar, certain management techniques that you can do may decrease scar visibility. Silicone gel products, as in BioCorneum, have been shown to improve scar visibility. I typically start this at the six week post-op visit, to make sure the incision has completely healed first. Silicone gel products have been used for many years to treat abnormal scars such as burn scars and hypertrophic scars. The addition of a sunblock provides an additional layer of protection from ultraviolet light, which darkens scars during their formation period.
Ask Dr. Wiener or his staff about BioCorneum on your next visit.
