Bigger is not Always Better When It Comes to Breast Augmentation and How to Pick the Right Size When it comes to breast augmentation surgery, many women have the idea that bigger is better, However, this is not always true. Read on to learn how to pick the right size implants for you, as explained by Dr. Thomas Wiener. There is a common belief that any size implant can be placed in any size breast, and this is actually not correct. Although there have been instances in the media of women with gigantic implants, this can be quite risky, and to achieve a result like that may take very exotic surgery including tissue expanders and multiple surgeries. Breast augmentation is a compromise between the desire for a larger breast and the anatomy that is present. Assessment of the breast size, diameter, and the consistency of the breast and skin is important because common sense tells us that a looser breast could hold a larger implant. One of the main measurements is the diameter of the breast, and this can be assessed either through measuring or by placing an implant sizer over the breast and making sure that the implant that will be used is no larger than the breast diameter. Otherwise, this can cause potentially serious problems which can be difficult to correct. Also, experience and judgment comes into play as far as the size and how this is affected by the looseness of the tissues. There are certainly times when a patient may want an implant that is too large for the breast, and part of my responsibility is to teach that patient why this can be problematic and why I will not proceed with that. An implant size that is balanced to the breast size will typically give a much better result and the patient is typically much happier.
