No Drain Tummy Tuck vs. Traditional Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck improves problems and issues that are caused by pregnancy and significant weight loss. These problems include stretching of skin with sagging, also stretching of the muscle wall of the abdomen which results in bulging of the abdomen. The tummy tuck removes the excess skin and then, through some special muscle tightening sutures, the bulging is greatly improved. There are a number of different types of tummy tucks but the most common, traditional tummy tuck involves just removing the skin and tightening the muscle. There is a newer type of tummy tuck, all of which is the same as the traditional, except in two areas. One of which is using some special sutures to get an improved result and also in the use of drains. The traditional tummy tuck uses drains after surgery to help remove fluid collection. The newer technique is called the no drain tummy tuck or the progressive tension sutures technique tummy tuck, which was developed by some colleagues of mine, and I then modified their technique and published this as a separate paper. The advantage of the no drain tummy tuck is that the progressive tension sutures hold the skin flap of the abdomen in place over the deeper tissues and, therefore, drains do not have to be used. This technique gives a better scar because there is not as much tension on the incision and tension is one of the things that can worsen scars. The no drain tummy tuck technique involves placing some special absorbable sutures from the deep surface of the abdominal skin flap and suturing these to the deeper muscle wall. This helps to reduce what is called the dead space which is just space that can expand and allow fluid to accumulate. The improvement in the scar and the improvement in the overall result of the outcome is significant in my hands. This technique is not used by the majority of plastic surgeons because it is a more involved technique and it also takes longer than a traditional tummy tuck but not necessarily a lot longer. The advantages far outweigh the small increase in time it takes to do the procedure. And my results using the no drain tummy tuck technique are superior to the results that I used to obtain using the traditional technique.
